Rhumb Line Winter Series Final

Well the tally is in and the last race of the series run. It was interesting that both Div I and Div II had positions up for grabs up untill the last race. Avalanche was race comittee and arranged for two windward leeward courses while the wind was up. Every one was rushing to get out to the course and get started.

The first race had Amigos closing the door on Mystic at the start. But Vampire needed Jabiru to be held up not Mystic as Jabirus sailed away from the beach and got better air to cross just ahead of Vampire at the windward mark. It was at this time that things began to go wrong for Vampire. They often set the record for slow spinnaker sets and today was a doozy. But for some reason Jabiru did not get away. The racing was tight as Amigos held her handicap on Vampire and Vampire had Jabiru. But as they came out of the leeward mark Jabiru took off, never to be seen again. And unfortunately Amigos who had earned 2nd place was denied again by the wind as the wind shut off, just as she was finishing.

Division 1 Winner: Avalanche

In Div two Toucan had a job to do. Trailing Spellbound by less then one point they put Vic in second place with a solid win. How they fly that spinnaker I will never know.  Both Vampire and Spellbound needed to pull off a first. And Avalanche wanted to oblige them. Not even waiting for Div II to finish they sounded the horn for Div I to get back at it while we still had wind. Once more around it was. So we chugged our beer and put the sandwiches down before heading into the beach once more.  This time Amigos was after Vampire trying to shut off their wind. But Vampire clawed her way out from under them to head out from the beach to chase Jabiru. Had the damage been done? But the wind tried to give hope. As the fleet came back at the committee boat and Div two was doing its start Div one was trying to not mess with Div 2's start. After all they where trying to decide the winner of the division. Vampire and Jabiru where just going for second place as Avalanche had wrapped up the series beforehand.

A new boat to racing was seen at the start-Genesis-a hunter 35.5. Hopefully she will be out for TYC's Tuesday night races. As Jabiru stretched it out, Mystic over took Amigos. This was an amazing sight as this big Boat normally does very well in the heavy air but not the light. Mark must have a problem. But no time to see what is up. The club was fixed for an amazing sight. Both Div One and Div Two where finishing from opposite ends of the course at the same time. Div two with spinnakers and Gennakers up and Div one reaching in as the wind built.  Was it enough? The Crew of Vampire had thought it was and celebrated too soon. They thought the race had gone an hour and their 6 min 15 second time after Jabiru would give them the win and put them in a tie for the series. This would have caused a tiebreak to go to Vampire. But no they had miss-timed the race and lost by 19 seconds to Jabiru.  Vic also had failed to bring home the goods as Toucan again won the race clinching the series win.

As the skippers get better the racing gets tighter. Lots of fun was had by all and the BBQ was great. Thanks to Kelly and Val and also Shawna. See you all at IYC and the upcoming TYC series on Tue night.   As well remember to register for the upcoming Jack and Jill race on May 2nd. We are still looking for a volunteer for committee.

Round Patos Island Race

One of our club boats decided it would be a good idea to enter an overnight race this early in the year, and in the year of never-ending winter. Even those of us who warned them of the risk of bad weather had no idea just how bad it could get. Below is the "official" account of the race, as told by SNSYC member Koit Teng. For a sense of the real experience that Vampire encountered that dark and stormy night, speak to one of the crew who was onboard. Fortunately this isn't a tale of tragedy and every one returned safely albeit a little battered, bruised and looking somewhat shell-shocked...

The happy-go-lucky crew of Vampire before the race

The Sidney North Saanich Yacht Club’s (SNSYC) Patos Island Annual Classic sailboat race was run on Saturday to Sunday, March 28 - 29.  Both long and short courses rounded Patos Island, located just east of Saturna Island.  20 boats competed, including eight from out-of-town.

The race started off the Sidney wharf with little wind on Saturday morning.  With the help of an ebb current, the 12 long course boats drifted south towards Beaumont Shoals while the eight short course boats headed off towards the U2 Sidney Channel marker.  In early afternoon the skies cleared and the wind picked up giving the boats long spinnaker runs up Haro Strait and along Boundary Pass towards Patos Island.  As the boats were heading back towards Sidney the wind kept building reaching gale force (35 knots) by midnight.  The rough weather caused some gear failure in the fleet resulting in nine boats withdrawing from the race.  One boat was dis-masted, two others lost steerage, and others withdrew as well.  The first short course boat Radio Flyer finished at 12:05 AM, and the first long course boat Marda Gras was back just after 01:25 AM.

Rhumb Line Winter Series #4

Another race down and a bit more wear and tear on the old ouija board. Here is how it shook out.

Toucan was race committee and wanted to set the standard with a challenging course. Adding a gybe mark and a bit more distance than the norm. The course was 3,2,1 X2 with marks to starboard and separate starts for the two div’s. Wind ranged from 14 app at the start to .01 in the second lap as the wind did its 180deg shift. The current was a light flood.

The start was very interesting with a Stb favoured end. Vampire trying an unorthodox manoeuvre to waste time by throwing one of its floating winch handles over the side and retrieving it in the 5min prestart and managing not to foul Avalanche. Then there was  the sandwich made by Avalanche and Jabiru with Vampire as the filling. All three boats going for the line and trying hard to pinch each other out. There was a huge grudge match today all over the course as Avalanche and Jabiru went at each other again and again. Jabiru was able to pull ahead a bit and get clean air but lost the advantage with a nasty spinnaker wrap at the first down wind leg. Avalanche giving no quarter was on them immediately. This continued like this for the whole race. During this whole time Div 2 was working their race and Toucan wisely shortened their course to a single lap. Many people in Div 1 wondered if we would even finish the race in the time limit as the wind turned off. But for the benefit of all Avalanche finished with 1 minute and 48 seconds left on the clock to extend the finish time by half an hour. Jabiru hot on their heals 16 seconds later. But then comes the two sleeper boats. Amigos missed taking second by 43 seconds! But Vampire was there to take the win correcting 7 minutes over the fleet. Vic in Spellbound enjoyed his day as well picking up a first and Ventana pulled in second. Maybe a Hunter 35.5 will shake things up in this div. I hear she will be racing in race 6/7.

Only two boats have filled out their Jack and Jill entry forms to date. If you are planning on racing please let us know so we can have enough food on hand for the BBQ. The entry form can be found on Mark's post for the race.

See you April 4th.

Jack & Jill Notice of Race
Written by Mark Hansen
Saturday, 14 March 2009 17:37

We had an overwhelming response to the Jack and Jill race poll we recently conducted on the website. In fact, 16 of you said “yes” you would like to participate. This leads us to believe that either we should get this race scheduled, or the vote was rigged. (Did someone vote more than once?)

So…mark your calendars, the race is scheduled for a warm and sunny Saturday, May 2nd.

Newbie’s are more than welcome. If you haven’t raced before, or haven’t raced your own boat before, this is a great opportunity to try it out!

The race rules are similar to our regularly scheduled races, with a few exceptions:

- Each boat is crewed with one Jack and one Jill (not your real names), and no one else.
- There will be two races, Jack must skipper one race, and Jill the other.
- The races are white sails only.

Following the race, there will be a barbeque on E-dock.

Please let Don Millie or Kelly Penney know if you wish to enter your boat, or register online. If you already have a PHRF rating we will use that. If not, let us know what type of boat it is and we will assign a rating for you.

There will be a $10 entry fee for all non-members.

We are looking for a volunteer for committee boat for this race.

Rhumb Line Winter Series #3
Written by Don Millie
Tuesday, 10 March 2009 17:25

Get out your ouija boards! Can any one believe we where seriously debating calling this race on account of too much wind! Fortunately for us the debate lasted long enough for the fearless race Capt to hop on Ventana, who was race committee and properly ready to go on time, to head outside of the breakwater and see what the weather was really like.

Kelly says, “Its great out here 13knots of wind lets go sailing”. Only a few sighs as the crews lost their chances to just sit and drink the afternoon away. Once more into the breach. The course was windward leeward twice around and one start that became a windward reach. The wind ranged from 22knots at the start to 0 in the middle of the race.

Vampire showed how not to start by trying to attack the committee boat with 28 sec to go while Avalanche was showing how it is done by using there rules seminar to get past Amigos and Jabiru to start at the perfect time. Toucan had a great race staying with the Div I boats half way up the first leg. Avalanche was throwing their weight around slamming Jabiru twice and rolling them. Some flattering comments where heard coming from the champion. It is always good to have good competition. Speaking of which Vampire was trying
to hold onto Amigos using its old #2 while Amigos sported its 2 new 3DL sails! His deception was now complete and Shawna could let the sail out of the bag! But Mark must not have paid his friendship dues to Amigos as he went to the beach for the expected wind that started to turn. Vampire, drinking the crew’s blood, reached the upwind mark just ahead of Amigos.

With a much-delayed spin hoist the wind again played cruel tricks on the boats. Boats where found all over the course now looking for wind and some finding it and some not. The lucky boats today being Avalanche getting a third bullet in a row and Vampire coming home for a solid second then Amigos and finally Jabiru. Div II had Toucan ahead of Spellbound by 34min. There was some discussion about the start finish line rule but Toucan prevailed to take the win.

After the race on cue the wind rose to 28 knots in the harbour for those who stayed to have a drink, and then the snow started. Who says the gods don’t favour sailors!

As you seen today we need more boats interested in racing. If you know any one who would like to get more use out of their boat and develop their skills, talk to them about coming out racing. Please speak to the race Capt and we can have them come out to just try it out and have fun.
